Suffering Bastard

A classic cocktail created in Cairo, combining cognac or brandy, gin, fresh lime juice and Angostura bitters, topped with ginger beer. Refreshing, aromatic and pleasantly spicy.

Preparation

  1. 1Add the cognac or brandy, gin, fresh lime juice and Angostura bitters to a cocktail shaker.
  2. 2Fill the shaker with ice and shake well.
  3. 3Pour unstrained into a Collins glass or a Suffering Bastard mug.
  4. 4Fill with fresh ice if needed.
  5. 5Top with ginger beer.
  6. 6Garnish with a mint sprig and optionally an orange slice.

Historical Background

The Suffering Bastard was created in Cairo, Egypt, by bartender Joe Scialom during World War II. It became associated with British troops in North Africa and was designed as a refreshing long drink combining brandy, gin, citrus and ginger beer. The cocktail is included in the official IBA cocktail list.
