Pomegranate Sherbet

A traditional Azerbaijani drink made from fresh pomegranate juice, lightly sweetened and delicately scented with rose water. Refreshing and vibrant, it is especially popular during celebrations and festive meals.

Preparation

  1. 1Combine the fresh pomegranate juice, cold water, sugar (or honey) and rose water in a pitcher.
  2. 2Stir until the sweetener is completely dissolved.
  3. 3Add the lemon juice if a brighter citrus note is desired.
  4. 4Fill a serving glass with ice.
  5. 5Pour the sherbet over the ice.
  6. 6Garnish with fresh pomegranate seeds and a sprig of mint.
  7. 7Serve well chilled.

Historical Background

Pomegranate Sherbet (Nar Şərbəti) is one of Azerbaijan's best-known traditional refreshments. Prepared from fresh pomegranate juice and often lightly perfumed with rose water, it has been served for centuries during family gatherings, weddings and festive occasions. Similar pomegranate sherbets are also enjoyed throughout Turkey and Iran, reflecting the long culinary traditions shared across the region.
