Karkade

A refreshing hibiscus drink served chilled or hot, celebrated for its deep ruby color and tart floral flavor.

Preparation

  1. 1Bring the water to a boil and remove from the heat.
  2. 2Add the dried hibiscus flowers and steep for 10–15 minutes.
  3. 3Strain the infusion into a pitcher.
  4. 4Stir in the sugar until dissolved.
  5. 5Chill thoroughly and serve over ice, or enjoy warm.
  6. 6Optionally add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice before serving.

Historical Background

Karkade (also spelled karkadé or karkadèh) is one of Egypt's best-known traditional drinks and is equally popular in Sudan. Made by infusing dried hibiscus flowers, it is commonly served at celebrations, weddings and during Ramadan, either hot or chilled.
